Diabetes and the eye
Diabetes is an increasingly common disease in which the sufferer is unable to regulate effectively the amount of sugar in their blood.
Symptoms of diabetes range from:
- Mild ranging thirst
- Hunger
- Tiredness
- Frequent urination
Poor long term control of blood sugar levels can cause changes to blood vessels. They become more prone to bleeding which can have a significant impact on vision. Early detection of Diabetic changes in the eyes vastly improves the outcome with treatment.
Diabetic individuals are more prone to:
- Cataracts
- Macular changes
- Prescription changes
- Increased susceptibility to infection
Because of this, regular examinations for diabetic patients are advised.
