Dry Eye
Dry eye is a condition where either the eye does not produce enough tears, or that the tears do not lubricate the eyes well enough.
Causes and symptoms are:
- Increases with age
- Dry environment
- Uncomfortable and gritty eyes
- Redness
- Blurred vision
- Symptoms worse after reading or spending long periods at computer screen
- Watering eyes, which can become worse in the wind
Generally symptoms can easily be relieved by daily use of artificial tears, although long term drying may require further investigation to rule out health issues.
Care:
- Artificial tears, available as either drops or ointment. Ointments last longer, but are thicker and can cause blurry vision
- Don't smoke. Avoid second-hand smoke, direct wind, and air conditioning
- Use a humidifier, especially in the winter
- Purposefully blink more often. Rest your eyes
