Dry macular degeneration

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) AMD occurs when there is a break down of cells in the macula which is the most sensitive area at the back of the eye. Central vision is gradually affected, with progressive blurring and difficulty with small print, peripheral vision remains unaffected. The causes of AMD are not known, although research indicates that genetics, dietary factors and lifestyle may all contribute. Once sight has been lost it cannot be restored but it is thought that the disease process can be slowed by making dietary and lifestyle changes. Dry AMD can convert to Wet AMD which is more aggressive. It is important to look out for signs of distortion as prompt detection and treatment can improve the prognosis of Wet AMD considerably.

Recommendations to slow the progress of AMD include:

  • Stop smoking
  • Limit saturated fats, cholesterol and alcohol
  • Use sunglasses and hats to reduce the amount of light entering the eye
  • Control of high blood pressure
  • Eat generous daily helpings of spinach, kale or broccolli
