Blepharitis is a common eye condition which can affect anyone. It causes the edges of the eyelids (eyelid margins) to become red and/or inflamed. In most cases, it will affect both eyes, but occasionally it may only affect one eye. Blepharitis can (and should) clear up with correct management, although it may never go away completely.

Although blepharitis will not affect your vision, if you have persistent symptoms, we still advise you come and see us as soon as you can.

  • Itchy, sore or red eyelids

  • Eyelids sticking together (not to be confused with Conjunctivitis)

  • Crusty, scaley or greasy eyelids

  • Burning or gritty sensation

  • You become sensitive to light

  • Swelling of the eyelid margins

  • Contact lenses become uncomfortable

  • Abnormal eyelash growth and sometimes eyelashes falling out

If symptoms persist or get worse, book an appointment with us so we can investigate your eye health further.

Although Blepharitis cannot be cured, it can be managed easily. You can treat symptoms of Blepharitis at home by following some basic hygiene guidelines:

  • Wash hands with warm soapy water

  • Dampen a clean flannel with hot (not boiling) water

  • Place flannel over eyelids for no longer than 10 minutes

  • Gently rub eyelid margin

  • You can repeat the process again if necessary
