We recommend the majority of people should be examined every couple of years.
However, some people may need to be examined more often if:
Why do I need an eye exam?
An eye examination should be part of a routine health check-up, just like a visit to the dentist.
There are a number of reasons why:
What happens during an Eye Examination?
At Jaysons there will always be a friendly face to greet you when you walk through the door.
Your prescription may have changed, requiring new specs or contact lenses.
A number of health conditions can be detected with an exam, both to do with the eyes and more general issues.
Common problems such as Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration or Diabetes may be detected, sometimes before you are even aware of any symptoms.
Occasionally we may also detect Minor Strokes or Aneurysms.
You're under 16 or over 60.
You have Diabetes
You are over 40 and have a family history of Glaucoma.
Are advised by your Optometrist to be tested more often.
You should also visit us if you notice your vision has changed in between your recommended examinations.
We begin by checking your details and asking you to fill out any necessary paperwork.
We'll then check your current spectacle prescription and perform a pre-test in preparation for you to see your optician.
In the test room your optician will begin by asking you a series of questions about your general health, lifestyle and vision. They will then carry out visual acuity tests to see how sharp your vision is.
Your optician will then check the ocular motility (movement) of your eyes and how well your eyes work together. They'll perform a stereopsis (depth perception test), a retinoscopy (retinal check) and finally a refraction to determine your prescription.
Extra tests may be carried out to further examine your eyes if the optician feels these are necessary. These include, but are not limited to, pupil dilations and fundus photographs, OCT scans, slit lamp tests, visual fields test, low vision assessments and colour overlay testing for dyslexia.
After an examination we will help you choose some specs should you require some new ones. If you're interested in having contact lenses please enquire whilst in store.
Finally, when you collect your new specs, we will check your vision in them and check that they are fitting correctly.
